Why Do You Need a Peace Corner in Your Classroom (or Home)?

Providing a safe space for your students and children to “feel their feels” is essential when applying social emotional learning concepts in your classroom and home. A peace corner is a great way to give students access to a safe and comfortable space when experiencing big feelings.

It also serves as a space to take breaks, reflect, and decompress.

Everyone needs a peace corner in their life.

Classroom Peace Corner Inspiration

Bring your personality into your peace corner. Create a space that is inviting and safe for all types of children.

Your corner should include tools to help students identify their feelings and offer solutions on how to manage these feelings. Here are some ideas to help inspire the peace corner in your classroom or home:

1. Social Emotional Learning books

Providing a small library of books gives the children access to literacy that can help them learn more to process their emotions.

Incorporating access to literary materials throughout the day teaches students positive ways to understand their emotions.

Having characters with similar problems gives the children a model to help learn ways to manage their emotions.

2. Soft Music

Providing headphones with light classical music or a small speaker with low volume, offers a peaceful and therapeutic environment for the children.

Create a classroom playlist specifically for your peace corner and give students access to this sensory experience when needed!

3. Comfortable Seating

Beanbag chairs, blankets, floor pillows, sensory swings, are all ideas of comfortable and calming seating.

Providing a cozy and safe place gives your students a sense of comfort to decompress and recharge. This is a space that should be able to be accessed at all times!

At home, you could try incorporating a peace corner in your child’s bedroom, a space in a common area, or you could create your own calming room if you have the extra space.

4. Peaceful Activities

Activities such as puzzles, raking sand (Zen garden), yoga cards, breathing exercises, writing and drawing are all great and effective ways to help calm the nervous system. Check out my TPT store for my peace corner writing prompt.

5. Sensory Activities

Lava lamps, fidgets, weighted blankets, and playdoh are all ways to incorporate sensory into your peace corner. Sensory activities help to calm the nervous system, help with cognitive growth, and help students to better engage with one another.
